As we announced in August 2024, our association became the Bulgarian European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) National Winner in the category “Investing in Entrepreneurial Skills” because of our pioneering educational and mentoring program – PARA Robotics Incubator.

A brief overview of the PARA Robotics Incubator

At its core, the PARA Robotics Incubator is designed to be much more than just a program; it is a dynamic ecosystem designed to empower youngsters passionate about engineering and STEM with the tools, resources, and mentorship necessary to turn technical concepts into viable products. By offering three key resources — funding for components, expert engineering support, and access to state-of-the-art labs and R&D centers — the incubator creates a fertile ground for innovations to flourish on the Bulgarian tech scene.

Our achievements … so far

PARA Robotics Incubator is an initiative that has already brought two innovative entrepreneurial ventures to life. The first, Smart Farm Robotix, developed an autonomous, solar-powered, lightweight weeding robot and secured EUR 2.4 million in funding from the EIC Accelerator. The second, D-Aerospace, received EUR 50,000 in funding to validate the first commercial units of their rescue drone project. In addition to these two ventures, seventeen teams have completed the program and under the incubator’s guidance, developing prototypes such as a delta robot, a solar panel cleaning robot, and a humanoid robot powered by a hydrogen cell. One of these teams – “Solar Reviver” that develops a solar panel cleaning robot project won a EUR 15,000 cash prize from the “Entrepreneurs in Science” competition, as well as the Green UP challenge. This track record showcases the incubator’s ability to nurture ideas from conception to commercialization, proving its effectiveness in fostering entrepreneurial talent.

The methodology driving the successful outcomes

PARA’s Robotics Incubator places a strong emphasis on personalized technical mentoring by pairing teams with experienced mentors tailored to their specific needs in areas like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, machine learning, and system integration. This mentorship is crucial in helping young innovators navigate the complexities of prototype development and overcome technical challenges. In addition to industry professionals, PARA’s Robotics Incubator has introduced peer-to-peer mentoring by connecting participants from the past two seasons with one another. PARA has also invested funds in supplying the teams with all the necessary components and software to transform their ideas into prototypes.

Another distinctive feature of the PARA Robotics Incubator is its focus on real-world application and feedback. Teams are given the opportunity to visit labs, R&D centers, and factories, where they can observe real-world prototypes in action and receive valuable input. These experiences provide insights into the practical applications of their innovations, enhancing their understanding of market needs and potential commercial opportunities.

A roadmap for future success in engineering innovative products and services

The Incubator’s success is amplified by PARA’s strong network of corporate sponsors and partners, which play a pivotal role in providing financial support and access to know-how and facilities. These partnerships are essential in equipping young innovators with the resources they need to develop high-quality prototypes and learn from industry leaders. PARA Robotics Incubator’s operating model is not just a local success story but a blueprint for global impact. By emphasising collaboration with mentors, providing the necessary hardware and components, partnerships with companies, and hands-on experience in factories and labs, the program offers a replicable framework that can be applied not only in Bulgaria, but it can also be adapted to different contexts and regions.
